When to Call an Electrician- Tasks You Should Never DIY

    JamesBy JamesSeptember 15, 2023

Youtube has helped us become DIY enthusiasts with online tutorials, making it tempting to tackle home improvement projects on our own. However, when it comes to electrical work, safety should always be the top priority as it can be incredibly dangerous if you are not incredibly certain of what you are doing or trained in electrical work. Electrical systems are complex and potentially hazardous if mishandled. Here is a list of tasks that you should never attempt to DIY and always entrust to a licensed Idaho Falls electrician.

    Electrical Panel Upgrades

Upgrading your electrical panel is a complex task that requires extensive knowledge of your home’s electrical system, local building codes, and safety protocols. Mistakes in this area can lead to overloaded circuits, electrical fires, or electrical shocks.

    Wiring New Circuits

Adding new electrical circuits or rewiring existing ones is not a DIY project. Incorrectly installed wiring can result in electrical shorts, fires, and even fatal accidents. Electricians are trained to ensure proper wiring and adherence to local codes.

    Installing Outlets and Switches

While it may seem straightforward, installing outlets and electrical switchboards involves more than just connecting wires. Mistakes can lead to electrical hazards, including shocks and fires. Idaho Falls Electricians are equipped to install these devices safely and correctly.

    Electrical Panel Maintenance

Maintenance of your electrical panel or electrical switchboards should only be handled by licensed electricians. Attempting to clean, repair, or modify the panel on your own can be extremely dangerous.

    Light Fixture Installation

Installing light fixtures may seem like a DIY-friendly task, but it can involve working with electrical wiring and mounting heavy fixtures at unreachable heights. It’s best to have an electrician handle these installations to ensure safety.

    Circuit Breaker Repairs

If you’re experiencing issues with circuit breakers, such as tripping or not resetting, it’s vital to have an electrician diagnose and repair the problem. Attempting to fix it yourself can lead to electrical hazards.

    Whole-House Rewiring

Rewiring an entire house is a major project that requires specialized knowledge and skills. It’s not something to be undertaken as a DIY endeavor due to the risk of easy-to-make mistakes that can result in electrical problems, fires, and damage to the whole house.

    Upgrading Electrical Services

Increasing your home’s electrical capacity by upgrading the service panel or increasing amperage should always be performed by a licensed electrician. This ensures that the electrical system can handle increased loads safely. Most often the entire system needs rewiring and that is something that an electrician and determine.

    Outdoor Wiring

Installing outdoor lighting, outlets, or other electrical components involves weatherproofing and grounding considerations. Electricians are trained to handle outdoor electrical work safely and in compliance with local codes. If mishandled or installed improperly, the combination of water and electricity can be fatal.

    Troubleshooting Electrical Issues

When you encounter electrical problems in your home, resist the urge to tinker with the wiring or components. Instead, call a professional electrician to diagnose and resolve the issue. DIY troubleshooting can lead to further problems and risks, some of which can be fatal.
